PAUL JABOUTLET AINE HERMITAGE LA PETITE CHAPELLE 2012 – 1500MLWhile billed as a second wine, there’s nothing inferior about the 2012 Hermitage la Petite Chapelle. A terrific wine in its own right, it offers classic currants, black raspberry, smoked earth, ground herbs and subtle meatiness to go with a ripe, full-bodied, textured and balanced style on the palate. Despite having a slightly upfront style, it has ample mid-palate concentration and building tannin.

PAUL JABOUTLET AINE HERMITAGE LA PETITE CHAPELLE 2013 – 1500MLThe 2013 Hermitage la Petite Chapelle is more forward and approachable than the grand vin, giving up lots of granite-induced minerality, smoked earth, bouquet garni and assorted dark fruits in its medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, layered style. Coming from a mix of parcels and aged 15-18 months in roughly 20% new French oak, its should evolve gracefully for 10-15 years.

PENFOLDS BIN 2 SHIRAZ MATARO – 750ML
PENFOLDS BIN 2 SHIRAZ MATARO – 750MLBin 2 was first released in 1960, yet was temporarily discontinued in Australia in the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. The original Bin 2 was an ‘Australian Burgundy’ style (despite its Rhône varieties) – typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on shiraz. The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mataro is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Monastrell or Mourvèdre, Mataro was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Often used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley.
It is valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip. Interest in Bin 2 has grown as the popularity of traditional Rhône varieties and blends continues to flourish.
A delightfully complex amalgam of savoury green olives, pepperoni with a hint of sweet/salty Dutch liquorice. Soft blue fruits to the fore with textured tannins providing grip. An ample palate gives this wine generosity and presence.

PENFOLDS BIN 389 CABERNET SHIRAZ (WITH ROCKET GIFT BOX) – 750MLSince the beginning, Penfolds has been looking to the stars. Dreaming of what could be beyond. The new limited edition rocket tin celebrates this pioneering spirit of going beyond, rather than accepting the status quo.
Tasting Notes:
Colour: Darkened deep red.
Nose: Unabashed (Baby Grange) complexities. Ample self-standing fruits already beginning to yield to other vinous intents. Cola, grated chocolate and cappuccino dust bind with juniper and spices. A flash of brown sugar and liquorice, brandy impressions replaced by blood orange-rind. Oak somewhat partially hidden, yet faint scents of cedar and graphite lobby for further bottle maturation.
Palate: Instantly fresh and fleshy. Some overt single-varietal cabernet and shiraz fruits still sit separate. Expected liquorice, stewed plum and blackcurrant, with dark chocolate and mocha in the background. Savoury and salivating – mouth-watering, succulent acidity. Impressive length with concentration, and a mandatory Bin 389 ‘sweet’ core; oak completely absorbed. Polished and refined.

PENFOLDS BIN 407 CABERNET SAUVIGNON – 750MLLaunched with the 1990 vintage in 1993, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high quality cabernet sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still with structure and depth of flavour. Textbook cabernet sauvignon, the varietally expressive Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by sensitive use of French and American oak.
Medium-bodied, elegantly framed. No mid-palate deficiencies!

PENFOLDS BIN 8 SHIRAZ CABERNET – 750ML
PENFOLDS BIN 8 SHIRAZ CABERNET – 750MLBin 8 has been crafted in the traditional Penfolds style. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in a silky, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to an interest in Cabernet Shiraz blends – a classic Australian wine style that caught the attention of the international wine media. Although Bin numbers were originally named after the original binning location after bottling, Bin 8 was given its number because it uses older oak previously used for Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389 – with ‘8’ obviously providing the common thread.
Boysenberry ice cream flavours flesh out the sumptuous palate, bolstered by Moroccan tagine spices and cumin roasted pumpkin. Earthy spices are rounded out by an invigorating red currant succulence. Tannins are powdery clearly showing the influence of cabernet sauvignon. A very focused wine with plenty of flesh ably supported by well integrated oak.

PENFOLDS GRANGE 2016 – 750ML (OUT OF STOCK)A blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate. This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power.

PENFOLDS KOONUNGA HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON – 750MLWell-regarded since launch, the Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the typical cellar ability that all Penfolds wines are renowned for. The wine has excellent structure and length and while it is ready for drinking now, it will gain further complexity with short term cellaring.
White cherries and cranberry follow aromatic pomegranate, bringing an associated succulence that borders on austerity. Fine silky tannins, a steely core, graphite and ferric backbone provides shape. A solid framework for the fruit and tannins to hinge upon.

PENFOLDS KOONUNGA HILL CHARDONNAY – 750MLKoonunga Hill Chardonnay reflects Penfolds’ multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy, which enables winemakers to source the best parcels of fruit to produce consistently high quality wines from each vintage. A light to medium bodied Chardonnay with distinctive primary fruit characters, sustained intensity and a subtle underlay of moderate oak.
With a vibrant pale straw colour, the nose is lovely tropical fruits, Granny Smith apple skin and hints of Nashi pear with supportive creamy nougat/praline oak. A very balanced palate, with 6 months yeast lees contact evident in the texture of the palate. The nougat/praline oak follows through with a crunchy citrus-like mouth watering acid to finish. A Chardonnay that is not too ‘heavy’, showing a nice lightness to the palate.

It is familial, distinctly Penfolds. Raspberry, vanillin and chocolate aromatics impatiently leap from the glass. Masses of fruit. Balanced, fresh, lush. To sign off: pronounced chewy tannins and lively acidity, conveyed by a judicious rental of oak.

It has excellent structure and length, and while it is ready for drinking now, the Koonunga Hill Shiraz will gain further complexity over the next two to four years.
A vibrant plum colour. On the nose, its red mulberry and raspberry coulis are immediately observed. Blueberry, bramble and earthy elements are offered with a little more encouragement. Sweet paprika, possibly provided by supportive oak, overlays shiraz vibrancy and generosity. The palate offers a steely and slatey texture surprise. Tannins are sleek and supple and oak lies beneath spice and berries, almost providing the foundations for them to be layered on top of. A crunchy acidity that provides succulence.

PENFOLDS KOONUNGA HILL SHIRAZ CABERNET – 750MLPenfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon has established itself as one of Australia’s favourite premium red wines. Since its first vintage in 1976, Koonunga Hill’s reputation has been built upon its affordable price, its approachability in its youth, with the potential to develop if carefully cellared. Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, the wine is known for its full-flavoured style with excellent Shiraz and Cabernet fruit, firm yet well-rounded structure and balanced oak.
Made as a traditional ‘Australian blend’, the Shiraz component provides fleshy fruit flavour while Cabernet provides a frame of fine grained tannins.
Bright and textural with ripe blood plums, dark cherry and blackberries — amplified by tones of vanilla bean creaminess and warm spice. Dried rosemary and sage give the wine a sense of earthiness. Fine, elegant tannins which frame and capture fruit depth providing length and balance.
