PENFOLDS BIN 2 SHIRAZ MATARO – 750MLBin 2 was first released in 1960, yet was temporarily discontinued in Australia in the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. The original Bin 2 was an ‘Australian Burgundy’ style (despite its Rhône varieties) – typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on shiraz. The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mataro is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Monastrell or Mourvèdre, Mataro was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Often used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley.
It is valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip. Interest in Bin 2 has grown as the popularity of traditional Rhône varieties and blends continues to flourish.
A delightfully complex amalgam of savoury green olives, pepperoni with a hint of sweet/salty Dutch liquorice. Soft blue fruits to the fore with textured tannins providing grip. An ample palate gives this wine generosity and presence.

Tasting Notes:
Colour: Darkened deep red.
Nose: Unabashed (Baby Grange) complexities. Ample self-standing fruits already beginning to yield to other vinous intents. Cola, grated chocolate and cappuccino dust bind with juniper and spices. A flash of brown sugar and liquorice, brandy impressions replaced by blood orange-rind. Oak somewhat partially hidden, yet faint scents of cedar and graphite lobby for further bottle maturation.
Palate: Instantly fresh and fleshy. Some overt single-varietal cabernet and shiraz fruits still sit separate. Expected liquorice, stewed plum and blackcurrant, with dark chocolate and mocha in the background. Savoury and salivating – mouth-watering, succulent acidity. Impressive length with concentration, and a mandatory Bin 389 ‘sweet’ core; oak completely absorbed. Polished and refined.

Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in a silky, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to an interest in Cabernet Shiraz blends – a classic Australian wine style that caught the attention of the international wine media. Although Bin numbers were originally named after the original binning location after bottling, Bin 8 was given its number because it uses older oak previously used for Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389 – with ‘8’ obviously providing the common thread.
Boysenberry ice cream flavours flesh out the sumptuous palate, bolstered by Moroccan tagine spices and cumin roasted pumpkin. Earthy spices are rounded out by an invigorating red currant succulence. Tannins are powdery clearly showing the influence of cabernet sauvignon. A very focused wine with plenty of flesh ably supported by well integrated oak.

Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power.

A very balanced palate, with 6 months yeast lees contact evident in the texture of the palate. The nougat/praline oak follows through with a crunchy citrus-like mouth watering acid to finish. A Chardonnay that is not too ‘heavy’, showing a nice lightness to the palate.

Koonunga Hill Shiraz is a plumper style with plush red-berried fruits, generosity of flavour and supple ripe tannins. It has excellent structure and length, and while it is ready for drinking now, the Koonunga Hill Shiraz will gain further complexity over the next two to four years.
A vibrant plum colour. On the nose, its red mulberry and raspberry coulis are immediately observed. Blueberry, bramble and earthy elements are offered with a little more encouragement. Sweet paprika, possibly provided by supportive oak, overlays shiraz vibrancy and generosity. The palate offers a steely and slatey texture surprise. Tannins are sleek and supple and oak lies beneath spice and berries, almost providing the foundations for them to be layered on top of. A crunchy acidity that provides succulence.
