Created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870 for his circle of friends, X.O was born at a turning point in history and introduced a new style of cognac: bold, rich and complex. The 100 eaux-de-vie assembled to create X.O were aged for a long time – some for 30 years – to give an unparalleled robustness. Maurice Hennessy gave the name X.O to this unique “extra old” cognac.

Its intense and deep amber color is a sign of its strength. Its flavors of candied fruit and its subtle and lightly spicy nose create a complete harmony: a mark of its roundness. To taste, a smooth, full sensation gives a simultaneously powerful and soft tonality with a hint of cocoa and a warm fruity presence. The long finish expresses all the complexity of the cognac’s blending and its long aging process.

The cognac inside our limited-edition Tribute to City of Lights – 1900 decanter is made from a unique blend of the finest and most precious eaux-de-vie from grapes grown in the exceptional terroir of Cognac Grande Champagne. The specially selected eaux-de-vie are aged slowly in Limousin oak casks called tierçons before being expertly blended to create our signature cognac. Containing aged eaux-de-vie, each one carefully watched over by generations of Cellar Master, every drop of LOUIS XIII cognac represents decades of craftsmanship and know-how, resulting in a unique taste of time that will be similar in the next century.

The LOUIS XIII City of Lights – 1900 special edition is presented in a limited series of 2,000 numbered decanters. The decanter is based on the distinctive design, inspired by a 16th-century flask uncovered from the site of the Battle of Jarnac, and later owned by LOUIS XIII founder, Paul-Émile Rémy Martin.

Hand crafted by skilled artisans, the City of Lights – 1900 decanter features 13 dentelle spikes rather than the usual 10, seven fleur-de-lys in 18ct gold and a central medallion. A limited-edition stopper takes the form of an upturned decanter, and incorporates NFC technology that allows you to register your decanter with the LOUIS XIII Society.

For this reason, Richard Hennessy cognac has been crafted in an extremely limited quantity: 12 tierçons, a historic barrel handcrafted in French oak by generations of cooper Masters at Hennessy’s own barrel-making workshop.

In a meeting of visionary minds, Richard Hennessy’s monumental legacy finds a contemporary incarnation in a bold, architectural, and graceful decanter in Baccarat crystal, as well as ritual accessories (glasses, a fusil, and a tray) designed by the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind.

The result is at once intuitive and unexpected: a monumental tribute to a pioneer.The spices, notes of leather and preserved fruits appear and reappear over and over, returning to emphasise the aromatic complexity of the nose in one magnificent symphony of flavour.
